- In 1799, Italian physicist Alessandro Volta noticed that when he put zinc and tin plates in salt water, electric current passed through the cables connected to these two metals. Thereupon, he placed papers or fabrics soaked in salt water between the zinc and silver plates. When he touched the two ends, he felt a strong current. Thus, Volta managed to produce the world’s first battery. This battery is called the “Voltaic battery”. Voltaic batteries are batteries connected in series.
How?
- Magnesium and carbon plates cause a chemical reaction in salt water (electrolyte). The magnesium plate loses electrons, the carbon plate gains electrons, and thus a current is created.
